Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, serves as the economic, administrative, and cultural hub of Lombok Island. As of 2023, the city’s population reached approximately 450,000, with a population density of 7,340 people per km², making it one of Indonesia’s most densely populated small cities.

Economically, Mataram contributes significantly to NTB’s GDP growth, which averaged 5.2% annually (2022-2023). Key sectors include trade (35% of local economy), services (25%), and tourism (15%), supported by over 12,000 registered SMEs. The city hosts 5 major traditional markets, including Cakranegara Market, the largest in Lombok.

Infrastructure highlights include:

  • Lombok International Airport (LOP), located 20 km south, handling 4 million passengers annually (2023).
