Medan In Figures

Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province, is one of Indonesia’s largest and most dynamic urban centers. Covering an area of approximately 265.10 square kilometers, Medan had an estimated population of 2,474,166 as of mid-2023, with a population density of around 9,330 people per square kilometer. The city is administratively divided into 21 districts (kecamatan) and over 150 urban villages (kelurahan). Medan serves as a major economic hub outside Java, with a Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) reaching approximately IDR 303.3 trillion in 2023, ranking it among the top five cities by economic output in Indonesia. With a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.826, Medan reflects high levels of education, health, and income. Strategically located near the Malacca Strait and supported by Kualanamu International Airport and the Port of Belawan, Medan plays a central role in regional trade, education, and cultural exchange in western Indonesia.
